Andrew Cranley

“ My most recent work has focused on the interaction between the figurative and abstract elements within a painting. Parallel to this I have tried to create figurative images of an unsettling nature conveyed through anxious, eccentric and concerned facial and body language.

The unsettling and anxious mood of my paintings is primarily portrayed through the facial expression and composure of my figurative elements. Many of the settings are of personal significance and are often based upon areas within my locality. I try to distort these slightly on the canvas as the mind would in a dream. The layering of these elements ultimately culminates in the final piece.

I continually experiment with technique and have explored various methods of constructing a painting combining many different rendering processes. My palette has become darker, contrasting dark, moody blues and purples with glaring pinks, yellows and oranges to emphasise the sense of anxiety which is a pivotal theme.
