"For me the practice of making drawings and paintings will always have its roots in the disciplined and observational study of everyday subjects.
I try to capture the essence of the subject within the first few marks that I bring into contact with the surface, and I favour charcoal because of it's unpredictability. The organic composition of this tool, suggests to me a latent energy, stored deep within it's fabric and awaiting release. The quickness, brittleness, and the density of blackness, all present in a single stroke. It reminds me of the most primal of art works, the drawings on cave walls or wood. It's a very physical practice, with bursts of energy and contemplative study."
